A film and documentary producer/writer, Harlene formed Perma Productions in 1990 in Los Angeles, California.
Her producing/writing credits include the short film ALONE, which won first prize in the Canadian International
Film Festival in 1991 for best independent short film, LIKE THIS…, a documentary dealing with prostate cancer
which won the Positive Lifestyle Award for best documentary in the 1999 Rhode Island International Film Festival,
and LOOKING FOR LUCREZIA, a documentary about the 17th century nun, Lucrezia Vizzana, which premiered at the
Italian Cultural Center in Los Angeles in 2001. She was an Associate Producer on IBSEN'S GHOST, a film made
for PBS and a co-producer of NATIONAL PARKS for U.S. Educational Films. Harlene has also written lyrics for
songs used in Francis Ford Coppola's THE RAIN PEOPLE and Richard Rush's PYCH-OUT.
Harlene is developing the feature film DISEMBODIED VOICES, based on her documentary about the nun composer,
Lucrezia Vizzana, as well as the film THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED, which won first prize for best screenplay in
the 2002 Rhode Island International Screenplay Competition. She also won first place in the 1997 Massachusetts
Film Office Screenwriting Competition for her screenplay JIMMY, co-written with Victor Warren. She is currently
writing a screenplay, SCANDAL AT TORRE DEL LAGO, about an incident in the life of the opera composer, Giacomo Puccini.
A Magna Cum Laude graduate with a Masters Degree in Music from The University Of California at Northridge,
Harlene has sung in opera houses in Germany and Austria. She is the widow of the film composer, Ronald Stein.
